“I go beyond simply painting what lies in front of me, I illustrate the seemingly normal moments in our lives that upon a closer look becomes extraordinary."

Born and raised in Orange County, California, Matt Talbert was immersed in art from a young age. With a photographer for a father and a very supportive mother, Matt was always encouraged to pursue his art.

Matt's artistic journey began at the Orange County High School of the Arts. Matt went on to attend the Laguna College of Art and Design, in the heart of Laguna's art district, where he majored in Illustration. His influences were many of the artists from the "golden age of illustration", like N.C. Wyeth, J.C. Leynedecker, Dean Cornwell and Norman Rockwell. But during his studies, Matt began to shift to a more classic style and developed a passion for figure painting. During his senior year, Matt was one of three students chosen to paint a large commission for the Hotel Laguna. He was also invited to be part of the Laguna College 45th Anniversary Alumni exhibition.

After graduation, Matt headed to New York City. Inspired by the architecture and people of this city, he began painting city scenes, capturing unique moments in everyday life. Using forms, colors and patterns of light, Matt brings mood and emotion to his paintings. Going beyond what he sees, Matt focuses on the unseen and unspoken details, bringing out the poetry of something as simple as a solitary man in a cafe.

Matt uses his love for photography to document his journeys. Back in his studio, these photos become the inspiration for his paintings. His canvas comes alive with his broad brushstrokes and before long, another one of life's hidden moments is brought forth for the viewer to enjoy.

Matt currently resides in Costa Mesa, California with his wife, Ashley.
